The challenge with this garden overlooking the Mekong River was to make a long narrow space look bigger. This was achieved by dividing the garden into two levels separated by a low laterite wall and accompanying brick pathway. This feature created an optical illusion and the space now feels almost square.
Traditional tropical plantings, which complement the colonial style of the residence, follow the perimeter walls to frame the view of the river.
This house is one of the new breed in Phnom Penh, and the clean modern lines of the building demanded a landscape which had similar complimentary characteristics.
The space under the mango trees, flanking the house, is divided into geometric shapes planted with contrasting colorurs of dark green Mondo Grass and white-leafed Chlorophytum. This part of the garden with its strict minimalist character contrasts with the lush jungle planting along the perimeter wall.
The horizontal lines of architect Gary Fell's villas are set into a hillside with dazzling view of the sea. During the construction phase, the reddish tone of the island and the scrub nature of the native plants, which could easily belong in an arid zone instead of on this tropical island, conjured up visions of an Arizona landscape.
This led to the idea of using plants with very sculptural shapes like the Agave Cactus and Bromeliads from the Amazon jungle with their wonderful rich shades of colour to compliment the architecture.
